Niantic Sells Gaming Division to Scopely in a $3.5 Billion Deal

In a landmark acquisition, Scopely has agreed to purchase Niantic’s gaming business for $3.5 billion, a move that significantly reshapes the mobile gaming industry. This deal brings iconic franchises such as Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, and Monster Hunter Now under Scopely’s umbrella.

A Strategic Expansion for Scopely

Scopely, known for popular mobile titles including Monopoly GO!, Star Trek Fleet Command, and Marvel Strike Force, will now integrate Niantic’s gaming portfolio, strengthening its position in the industry. The acquisition also includes Niantic’s companion apps and services, Campfire and Wayfarer. According to company statements, Niantic’s gaming division boasts over 30 million monthly active players and generated over $1 billion in revenue in 2024.

Pokémon GO: The Star of the Deal

Among the acquired assets, Pokémon GO remains the crown jewel. As one of the most successful mobile games in history, Pokémon GO leverages augmented reality technology to engage players in real-world exploration and battles. With over 20 million weekly active users, the game has transcended traditional mobile gaming, incorporating live events that will continue under Scopely’s management.

Ed Wu, Senior Vice President of Pokémon GO, expressed optimism about the transition: “It has been an incredible joy to serve hundreds of millions of Trainers in our real-world community for the past decade, and I truly believe the best is yet to come. With Scopely’s full commitment, experience, and resources, we’re going to make Pokémon GO the very best it can be. We remain focused on delivering thrilling battles, new social connections, and the excitement of discovering Pokémon in the real world.”

Scopely’s Vision for the Future

Tim O’Brien, Chief Revenue Officer and board member of Scopely, emphasized the company’s dedication to fostering global gaming communities: “Scopely has always been focused on building meaningful player experiences, and Niantic’s team has excelled in creating immersive, real-world gaming adventures. We are eager to support their vision and accelerate their creativity. Few games achieve the scale and longevity of Pokémon GO, which attracted over 100 million players last year. With massive live events and a unique ability to connect people, Pokémon GO is truly special, and we are committed to its continued success.”

The Future of Niantic

Following the acquisition, Niantic will rebrand as Niantic Spatial Inc., focusing on geospatial AI technology. The new company, led by founder John Hanke, will retain ownership of Ingress Prime and Peridot.

Hanke reaffirmed his confidence in the deal, stating: “Niantic games have always connected people and inspired exploration. I believe they will continue to thrive under Scopely’s expertise. Their experience in managing top-tier intellectual properties and commitment to player communities ensure that these games will receive long-term support and investment, evolving into ‘forever games’ that future generations will enjoy.”

With this acquisition, Scopely cements its role as a major player in the mobile gaming industry, ensuring that Pokémon GO and other beloved titles continue to flourish for years to come.
